Why Football Players Should Add Pilates to Their Training

Athletes spend countless hours developing sport-specific skills. But repetitive movement patterns can create muscle imbalances, reduced mobility, and overuse injuries. Pilates helps fill those gaps by strengthening the body in a way that complements traditional training rather than replacing it.

Even NFL Commission Roger Goodell credits Pilates for improved quality of life. He values Pilates as, “My time, where I can focus on myself.” He also added that Pilates has helped him feel “great. When you feel better, when you are in shape is physically, mentally and emotionally, you can better handle any kind of challenge. So I think it has been very helpful." [FORBES]

Pilates Builds Functional Core Strength

When people hear "core," they often think of six-pack abs. Pilates takes a much broader approach. It strengthens the deep muscles of the abdomen, back, hips, and pelvic floor that stabilize the spine and transfer power throughout the body.

A stronger core helps athletes:

  • Generate more power during explosive movements

  • Improve balance and coordination

  • Maintain proper posture during competition

  • Reduce unnecessary stress on the lower back

Whether you're throwing a football, swinging a golf club, or sprinting down a track, every movement begins with a stable core.

Will Anderson Jr. of the Houston Texans credits Pilates on his ability to navigate tough plays. He told ESPN, "That play shows the core strength," Anderson told ESPN of a sack on [Josh] Allen. "I was able to turn the corner and to be able to just pop back up and not stay on the ground. Pilates has been really good, opening up these muscles, being able to turn the corner." [ESPN]

Pilates Improves Mobility Without Sacrificing Strength

Many athletes become tight from repetitive training. Limited mobility can decrease performance and increase injury risk.

Pilates focuses on controlled movement through a full range of motion, helping athletes:

  • Improve flexibility

  • Increase joint mobility

  • Move more efficiently

  • Recover from intense workouts

Unlike passive stretching, Pilates develops strength throughout that range of motion, creating athletes who are both mobile and stable.

Dexter Lawrence of the New York Giants is quoted in the NYTIMES "A lot of core work so that helps with my lower back,” Lawrence says. “Just flexibility and strengthening different areas.” [NYTIMES]

Pilates Enhances Balance and Body Awareness

Elite athletes often make incredibly complex movements look effortless. Much of that comes from excellent proprioception—the body's awareness of where it is in space.

Pilates emphasizes precision and control, helping athletes:

  • Improve balance

  • React more quickly

  • Develop better movement mechanics

  • Correct compensations before they become injuries

These improvements can be especially valuable in sports that require quick changes of direction or single-leg stability.

Garret Williams of The Arizona Cardinals credits Pilates for helping his "change of direction." Williams told ESPN, "I felt more reactive, and I felt like I was able to just get in different positions in the air to get the ball."[ESPN]

Pilates Helps Prevent Injuries

Injuries don't just happen from big collisions—they often develop slowly because of poor movement patterns or muscle imbalances.

Pilates addresses these issues by:

  • Strengthening stabilizing muscles

  • Improving posture

  • Encouraging symmetrical movement

  • Reducing stress on joints

Many physical therapists incorporate Pilates principles into rehabilitation because of its emphasis on controlled, high-quality movement.

Pilates Speeds Recovery

Recovery is where progress happens. Pilates offers a low-impact way to keep the body moving while allowing muscles and joints to recover from demanding practices and competitions.

Gentle Pilates sessions can:

  • Improve circulation

  • Reduce muscle stiffness

  • Restore mobility

  • Help athletes feel refreshed between workouts

It's an excellent active recovery option on rest days or during lighter training weeks.

Pilates Boosts Performance Across Every Sport

The benefits of Pilates aren't limited to one type of athlete.

Runners improve posture and stride efficiency.

Golfers gain rotational mobility and core stability for a more powerful swing.

Football players develop better balance, coordination, and injury resilience.

Baseball and softball players improve rotational strength for hitting and throwing.

Cyclists counteract hours spent in a forward position.

Swimmers build shoulder stability while improving body alignment in the water.

No matter the sport, better movement leads to better performance.
